Hey HogWild,

I'm not comfortable that my girlfriend is still friends with her ex-boyfriend. Am I being insecure or paranoid or am I right to be uneasy about this? And how do I tell her my feelings without sounding like a control-freak?

You're thinking, "My girlfriend is hanging out with a man she used to sha-boink! What if they're out having a cup of coffee and then a latte leads to a cappuccino which leads to a steamy espresso in his bed! Nooo! I must prevent him from tasting her coffee bean!"

Should you feel uneasy about your girlfriend being friends with her ex? ... It depends.

If their current status doesn’t match up to what I say in that dating advice video -- watch out!

Basically, your girlfriend must have zero belief that she wants to be back with him. AND... he must have zero desire to be with her romantically.

Very rarely is this the case for the both the guy and girl at the same time.

It's not to say they are bad people plotting to DESTROY YOU! But rather, they are humans and us humans sometimes fall to temptation. So sometimes it's better not to put yourself in difficult situations.

TEMPTING SITUATIONS THAT YOU SHOULDN’T PUT YOURSELF IN

- showering with your ex while your new significant other is in the other room
- while on a diet, visiting the Museum of Chocolate
- while trying to control your spending and alcoholism, you decide to play poker in a bar...
full of alcoholic strippers. Who invite you to drink vodka. off their chests.

If they are in far apart cities, you have less to be concerned about. If they live within a car ride of each you need to be concerned IF she is...

- She needs to give your relationship a fair chance to grow and that might not happen if she's still emotionally involved with her ex.

- Talk about boundaries. Maybe they don't hang out at night alone or go for long walks on the beach or take that one-week trip to Las Vegas they’ve been planning. The way to talk about it without sounding like a control freak is by saying exactly this...
